INDIANAPOLIS - A 12-year-old girl was recovering
at Riley Hospital on Friday afternoon after being
shot as she slept in her bed.
Relatives say the shooting happened just after
midnight at an apartment complex near 34th Street
and Moller Road. And, they say, it's a wonder no
one was killed with all of the shots fired at the west
side apartment.
"My sister called my mom and said, 'Ra-Je's been
shot,'" said Christopher Watson, the victim's uncle.
"I came running down here to see what was going
on.
So when I came down here I saw all the little
bullet holes, and my sister's crying." Watson said he counted 20 bullet holes in his
sister's apartment at Tara Townhouses.
One of
those bullets landed in his niece's shoulder while
the 12-year-old was asleep upstairs.
She was rushed to Riley Children's Hospital, but is
 expected to recover.
Indianapolis police said they found 19 spent 9mm
shell casings at the scene, plus 21 spent 7.62 mm
shell casings.
Watson said he isn't sure why anyone would have
done this, unless it was an old grudge that went
back several years.
"My niece, she ain't but 12, she goes to school," he
said. "My sister, she's 36. She goes to work."
The next door neighbors - who also had several
small children sleeping inside - feel relieved no one
in their family became a victim of a stray bullet.
"We're not lucky; we are very blessed," said
neighbor Tauhidah Dullen. We're very blessed."
Watson said his family, who also had two young
nephews asleep inside when the shots were fired,
is lucky that no one was killed.
"I don't know what to say," Watson said. "I just
want people to stop the violence; you know what
 I'm saying? That's all I want."
Police are still searching for the shooter or shooters,
but said they currently have no suspects or
descriptions.
