H ere it comes, then. After the storm: the storm. Brazil 2014 is finally upon us, a drama of ranged tectonic interests and
high-end chicanery now dissolved into the relatively simple matter of the world's greatest sporting event.
This has been the peculiar
trajectory of this World Cup , which already feels like a tale told in reverse, a seven-year,
continental-scale wrangle that has dwindled away now to this, a series of football matches over four weeks in summer, starting with the hosts' opening fixture against Croatia in São Paulo on Thursday night.
Brazil, naturally, expects. Although it must be said this has from the start been the most
disobedient of global extravaganzas, chafing relentlessly against its own outsized margins.
In the Brazilian government's ludicrously optimistic recent TV advert campaign – described by federal prosecutors as "absurdly
divorced from reality" – Brazil 2014 was styled not just a World Cup but as the World Cup: a
Copa das Copas – and this, at least, rings true.
There are World Cups and there are World Cups. And then there are Brazilian World Cups. For all the broader themes of vanished
infrastructure projects and social unrest, Brazil 2014 is at heart a genuinely thrilling prospect, a
pure sporting treasure to make even the most jaded observer drool a little.
When it comes to World Cups in the modern era only Italia 90 gets close as a return to one of football's grand sentimental heartlands.
USA 94 can match Brazil for sheer geographical spread. South Africa carried similar nation- building ambitions. The Copa das Copas, though, has the lot. There had been some talk
in the shemozzle over Qatar 2022 of a first winter World Cup.
But let's face it, this one already feels like Christmas. Although even here there are contradictions. Seven years ago there seemed little doubt about what this World Cup would mean to Brazilians. But prosperity and education tend to take the edge off a diet of bread and circuses
and the protests that have attached themselves to the edges of the World Cup are not so much an indication of concerted hostility towards the tournament itself – and certainly not to Luiz
Felipe Scolari's affectionately regarded Seleção – but a symptom of wider dissatisfaction with Fifa and an ingrained and horribly self-serving industrial overclass, a collision of old and new that is central to Brazil's wider future.
Plus the protests are another reminder of the indissoluble link between football, the World
Cup and Brazil's basic sense of itself. This is a nation whose progress can be measured against these four-yearly intercontinental encampments.
You wouldn't know it from the American flags waving wistfully in the trailer, but "Transformers: Age of Extinction" could be one of the biggest Chinese films this year.
Like previous entries in the "Transformers" series, the fourth installment of Michael Bay's robot-heavy action franchise is produced by Hollywood's di Bonaventura Pictures , but "Age
of Extinction" also bears co-production credits from a pair of Chinese studios, Jiaflix Enterprises and the China Movie Channel.
"Transformers: Age of Extinction" was shot extensively in the Chinese mainland and features Chinese actors Li Bingbing and Han Geng, making it the largest of a new group of Hollywood blockbusters that do more than pay lip service to the international market.
With less than a month before the premiere, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" is aggressively courting the Chinese market.
Paramount has partnered with the China Movie Media Group to promote the film heavily across
the nation.
"Transformers" is set to close the Shanghai International Film Festival only a few days after its world premiere in Hong Kong.
Among the more creative pitches is a video message from Mark Wahlberg wishing Chinese students luck on their upcoming -- and extremely stressful -- college entrance exams.
"Hey, everyone, I'm Mark Wahlberg, star of the new movie Transformers 4: The Age of Extinction," Wahlberg says with the assistance of Chinese subtitles.
"The annual college entrance exam is coming, so I'd like to wish all of you students out there lots of luck, and don't forget to catch Transformers 4 -- after the
exam!"
From casting to content to promotion, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" is heralding the age of the truly international blockbuster.
This isn't an accident; China is the second- biggest film market in the world, and it's only
going to get bigger. The country's box-office grosses in 2013 hit $3.6 billion, and 2014 is
headed for a take of $5 billion, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
(Deadline estimates a slightly more modest $4.5 billion.) To meet growing demand, China added more than 5,000 screens in 2013 alone, Variety reports.
The U.S. box office, by comparison, is expanding at a
significantly slower pace, hovering at $10.9 billion in 2012 and 2013, up slightly from 2011's
$10.1 billion.
If the numbers continue along that path, China could rival or overtake the U.S. box office by the end of the decade, and Hollywood is struggling to move into that market.
"It's a market where if you can get through the quotas they have in place, you can make a lot of
incremental money on your films. It's the second-largest market and it's growing at a very
rapid rate," Anthony Wible, managing director of entertainment and digital media at financial advisory firm Janney Montgomery Scott, told
IBTimes.
"Transformers" is hardly Hollywood's first attempt at reaching out to Chinese audiences, but it's arguably the smartest -- and the most
thorough.
Last year, Marvel's "Iron Man 3"
boasted a co-production status with China's DMG Entertainment, and director Shane Black filmed about three minutes' worth of scenes exclusive to the Chinese cut of the film .
But most Chinese audience members were reportedly turned off by the scenes , which
pandered to the audience with product placement and lines like, "Tony doesn't have to do this alone -- China can help."
This year's "X-Men: Days of Future Past" tried a more subtle approach that worked out more
smoothly. Fox's time-traveling superhero feature set a final-act fight scene in China and cast Chinese star Fan Bingbing as the teleporting X-Man Blink.
(Fan also appeared in the Chinese- only scenes of "Iron Man 3"). Despite these efforts, "Days of Future Past" uses its time travel mechanism to launch a soft reboot of the X-Men series at the end of the film, meaning, for purposes of the story, the Chinese scenes effectively never happened.
"Transformers: Age of Extinction" is, by contrast, the first of a wave of American blockbusters to make a truly naturalistic effort
at integrating Chinese and American content, and it's likely to pay off handsomely.
The last film in the series, "Transformers: Dark of the
Moon," took in $173.6 million in China and currently stands as the country's fourth-highest grossing film ever .
Still, there are a number of risks in every business venture, and Hollywood's move into China doesn't mean the market is strictly a cash cow.
For one, while the Chinese box office has been growing at an enormous rate, American
studios get a smaller slice of the gross than in any other foreign market.
"It's not the most lucrative market for your film given that the film rental rates are heavily
skewed in favor of the exhibitors," Wible said.
In the United States, Wible noted, exhibitors and studios typically split film gross half and half, but in China, local exhibitors receive 75 percent of the revenue while studios receive only 25 percent.
"It's great because it's all incremental dollars, but getting $100 million in China isn't the same as getting $100 million in Latin America," Wible added, noting that Chinese exhibitors guarantee studios the lowest percent of box office revenue
in the world.
There is, however, a workaround to this, which "Transformers" and others are employing.
While foreign studios receive only 25 percent of the box office gross in China, studios that co-
produce their features with Chinese production companies receive a better cut of 38 percent,
China Briefing explains .
That still isn't as good
as other foreign markets, of course, but it's a step up. Going forward, more and more studios
are likely to use the co production route as a
means of boosting their take home in China.
Some studios are banking on the Chinese market enough that they're permanently expanding into the country. In 2012,
DreamWorks Animation announced the joint venture Oriental DreamWorks, designed to produce animated films for both Chinese and American markets.
Next winter, DreamWorks
Animation and Oriental DreamWorks will jointly launch "Kung Fu Panda 3," about a third
of which will have been produced in China .
Even more than "Transformers: Age of Extinction," the latest installment in the "Kung
Fu Panda" franchise won't just be a foreign export, it will be a collaboration between creative teams on two different sides of the globe, and a sign that the future of large-scale filmmaking no longer belongs exclusively to
Hollywood.
Say what?! Kanye West performed at the X Games in Austin, Texas over the weekend, and according to a number of fans, the rapper removed pal/ collaborator Jay's name from no less than three songs during his set!
And not only that, but there's video of it too! Kanye didn't say Jay's name whenbhe performed "Cold," and when he sang "Blood on the Leaves," he changed the lyric, "He ain't withbyou, he with Beyonce, you need to stop actin' lazy"bto "You need to stop actin' crazy."
He ALSO omitted Jay Z's name in his old hit "Touch the Sky." Meow, Yeezy! As you know, Beyonce and Jay Z bailed on Kanye and Kim Kardashian's
wedding last month in Florence, Italy, and though Kim's mom Kris Jenner claimed that she figured
the duo were busy with work , they were postingbvacation pictures from the Hamptons. (Translation: Bey and Jay wanted nothing to do with Kim's D list nuptials -- and they weren't the only ones !)
Kim was reportedly furious that the superstar couple bailed on her big day, and it seems like Kanye might be bitter about it as well!
And this wouldn't be the first time the rappers have butted heads.
Back in 2011, the New York Post reported that they were "barely speaking to each other" after
disagreeing on the details of their Watch the
Throne tour.
Bad romance? Khloe Kardashian has found love again with French Montana after her split with Lamar Odom, but members of her famous familybhave their suspicions the rapper's intentions might not be so pure.
"[They] are very skeptical of him.
They think he's using Khloe for fame ," a source tells Us Weekly of sister Kim and stepdad Bruce
Jenner.
Apparently the lyricist wants to "sit at the cool kids' table" and "has been trying to get close to people he thinks are popular."
This is the reality star's first major relationship since filing for
divorce, so she might be blinded by the romantic attention.
"Being with Khloe means everyone knows who French is now, so he's getting a lot out of it," the source adds.
Kerry Washington is known for keeping her lips sealed when it comes to her personal life, but
the actress opened up about life as a new mommy during a chit chat with The Los Angeles
Times today.
In her first post-baby interview , the "Scandal" star took questions from Twitter fans, and of
course, everyone wanted to know about baby Isabelle Amarachi Asomugha.
"Now that you're a mom will it be bittersweet to go back to work," a fan asked. "So tricky because you know I don't talk about this stuff," the notoriously private star
responded, before going to to say she feels "really blessed."
"I will say I feel really, really blessed," Kerry shared. "I just feel really blessed that I'm kind of living extraordinary dreams come true in my work life and in my personal life."
According to reports, she is scheduled to make her first post-baby appearance at the 2014 BET
Awards on Sunday, June 29.
Kerry and hubby Nnamdi Asomugha — who married in as private Idaho ceremony last
July — quietly welcomed their daughter into the world on April 21.
Hoping that lightning will strike twice, Channing Tatum showed up at the Hollywood premiere of "22 Jump Street" at the Regency Village Theatre last night (June 10).
Joined by his lovely wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum , the "Magic Mike" hunk hammed it up with his partner in crime Jonah Hill as well as fellow funnyman Dave
Franco .
During a recent interview, Channing and Jonah were asked what they'd give each other as gifts now that they're such good friends.
Hill declared, "I can tell you what I want!" and Tatum fired back, "I am not going to give him my
wife, no matter what he asks and what he's going to give me for it.
It's just what's not going to happen." Trying his best to sound surprised and disappointed, the "Wolf of Wall Street" star sighed, "I just don't get what the big deal is!"
Treating herself to a pampering session, Selena Gomez showed up at Nine Zero One salon in West Hollywood on Tuesday (June 10).
The super-cute "Come and Get It" songstress was joined by a few friends and showed off her toned tummy in a black crop top with a blue maxi skirt as she waited for the valet.
In related news, it sounds like Selena is none-too- pleased that former friend Miley Cyrus used a
cardboard cutout of her face and paraded it around the stage while singing "FU" in Milan on Sunday
(June 8).
An insider told Hollywood Life, "Selena already knows that Miley will do anything for attention even if it means dissing other people.
Selena would never
do what Miley did and doesn't really have any respect for her in the first place.
She thinks Miley's number one priority in life is getting attention and she actually feels sorry for her!"
"They have been catty and feuding since the Disney days and this is just a continuance of it.
There is definitely no love lost and they talk sh*t about each other behind closed doors all the time.
This just happened to be made public. Selena thinks Miley is lame, but expected this from Miley since they both don't like each other."
With such a massive media empire it's hard to believe that Oprah Winfrey is raising the bar for herself yet again.
And in the July 2014 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, the 60-year-old icon explains that each
step of her journey is designed to take things to the next level.
"I'm on a mission to upgrade my life in every way I can. Every Oprah Show I ever taped, every magazine article I published, every Life class and Super Soul Sunday I've done – they all originated with the intention to upgrade."
"Don't get me wrong: I feel blessed to have the life I'm living. Several times a day I look around in awe of how someone like me, born in apartheid Mississippi, got to where I am.
It's still a wonder to me. And yet each day I enhance and expand the material goodness and grace I've received by connecting to the deeper Presence within everything that's alive."
"Throughout the day I find moments to just exhale deeply, then inhale and exhale again, taking the time to notice my breathing.
It always gives me a little recharge, a surge of energy that reminds me I'm alive. Here. Now. It's an upgrade in capital-A awareness."
As for her current literary favorite, Winfrey notes,."I'm most excited about Ayana Mathis and her book The Twelve Tribes of Hattie. I love it - I give it out to more people than any other book.
Last Christmas Ivbought 25-30 copies and gave them to all of my girls. I'm also excited about Sue Monk Kidd's book The Invention of Wings because I'm getting ready to turn that book into a movie."
And she's still not sure what her big Independence Day meal will include- "4th of July is always a funvday because it's a big decision: will I do a cheeseburger, a veggie burger or a hot dog?"
It's official: Kelly Roland is joining the hot Hollywood mommy club! The 33-year-old
beauty and manager-turned-hubby Tim Witherspoon are expecting their first child
together.
After weeks of baby bump rumors , Kelly announced the exciting news with on Instagram today with a picture of baby Jordan
sneakers. "I'll be stuntin like my daddy," she
captioned the adorable post.
As we reported earlier, the newlyweds tied the knot on May 9 in Costa Rica. According to sources, it was a "quick, simple ceremony" with just 30 of their closest friends and family, including Beyonce, Solange, Michelle Williams and LaLa Anthony.
We know Kelly would make an incredible mother just like her celebrity besties.
Congratulations Kelly and Tim!
They're two of the most prolific female pop singers of all time and Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera are pretty popular with drug dealers as well.
According to a report, narcotics officers in New York spent ten months investigating a large
network of cocaine traffickers and sellers, and they discovered that both the "Ain't No Other Man" songstress and the "Baby One More Time" hitmaker's names were used as code words.
Ms. Spears' first name was substituted for 'crack cocaine,' while Christina's full name replaced 'powdered cocaine.'
At this point the New York Attorney General has arrested 25 offenders with a combined 340 drug trafficking charges. Mickey Mouse Club, indeed!
Where there's smoke, there's fire and it looks like something is burning in T.I. and Tiny's relationship.
After countless rumors surrounding their marriage and T.I.'s alleged infidelities (he was photo'd with another woman on Mother's Day) , it appears that the modern-day Huxtables aren't even on speaking terms.
How do we know? T.I.'s mom, Violeta Morgan, was being messy on Instagram and
commented under Tiny's picture,
Saying:
The streets are talking but Tracy Morgan is not losing his leg. In the wake of Saturday's deadly multi-car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike, the comedian's
rep, Lewis Kay, released a statement regarding his client's condition.
Although the "30 Rock" alum's leg was horribly broken in the accident, Kay said "rumors about amputating his leg are completely fabricated."
"Tracy remains in critical but stable condition," the publicist shared. "His fiancée Megan is by
his side. The concern for his well-being has been overwhelming, but Megan is respectfully asking that the media await official word through these channels before speculating (mostly inaccurately) on his condition.
As we shared yesterday, Tracy had surgery on his broken leg.
We are working closely with the incredible staff at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital to
share information when it is available." Kay added, "This recovery will be arduous and
we hope that you can be patient during this difficult time."
As we reported earlier, the six-car pileup killed Tracy's longtime friend and writing partner James "Jimmy Mack" McNair, and injured four others.
Prosecutors charged 35-year-old truck driver Kevin Roper with death by auto and four counts of assault by auto. Police told ABC News that Roper was dozing off moments before the chain-reaction collision.
He turned himself in Saturday night and bail was set at $50,000.
By official account, the Pakistani Taliban had in recent weeks been engaged in peace talks with
the government in Islamabad in what had been billed as an effort to quell Pakistan's long- running violence.
Those talks effectively exploded in recent days along with hopes for peace. First, the Taliban
mounted a lethal attack on the international airport in Karachi late Sunday, and then struck
again at a nearby security training camp on Tuesday, forcing a second airport shutdown as security forces fired at gunmen who fled the scene.
The pair of attacks killed 36 people while underscoring the growing strength of the Pakistani Taliban despite years of American drone strikes and pledges from the Pakistani
government to quell the insurgency.
Experts construed the assaults on the Karachi airport -- the busiest in the nation, and a gateway to the rest of the world -- as a sign of the Taliban's
growing confidence as it ratchets up its confrontation with the government.
"There almost certainly will be more attacks," Lisa Ruth, a former CIA officer, told International Business Times. "The question is when and where. The airport attacks were
highly successful from the point of view of a terrorist – gaining international attention, shutting down the airport and causing damage and loss of life.
This likely will further embolden
the Taliban to take more action."
The Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e Taliban (TTP), was formed in 2007 with the
mission to impose a fundamentalist brand of
Islamic law while attacking the Pakistani military.
In the years since, the organization -- really a loose affiliation of militant groups
based in tribal areas of the country -- has taken responsibility for thousands of deaths and has coordinated numerous assaults on security
targets.
Street protests held in opposition to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, as well as an ongoing subway
workers' strike, are causing turmoil in Brazil's biggest city just three days before the
international soccer tournament begins.
Police in São Paulo, Brazil, used tear gas to disperse protesters on Monday as the subway workers' strike enters its fifth day without a resolution.
Despite a court order, the workers
voted to continue their strike "indefinitely " on Sunday.
The subway workers' strike and street protests have crippled São Paulo; more than 20 percent of the city remains in gridlock, local newspaper Folha de São Paulo reports.
Meanwhile, transit workers and homeless citizens have held similar protests at the city's center.
Brazilian President Dilma Roussef has vowed not to allow street protests to disrupt the World Cup, but the country's citizens are largely dissatisfied with a government that spent an
estimated $14 billion on a soccer tournament.
A recent poll found that 72 percent of Brazilians are unhappy with their country's situation,
while six out of 10 citizens believe the World Cup is bad for the Brazilian economy.
Street demonstrations have plagued Brazil for months, as angry citizens protest the decision to spend so much on the World Cup while leaving myriad domestic issues unresolved.
In May, more than 20,000 people affiliated with Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem-Teto, or
Homeless Workers' Movement, took to the streets of São Paulo, disrupting traffic for more
than 150 miles.
Meanwhile, Brazil remains unprepared to deal with the influx of an estimated 500,000 tourists
who will arrive in the country for the World Cup.
Airports and stadiums in several of Brazil's 12 host cities remain unfinished, while droughts have placed a significant strain on the country's power grid.
As dissent mounts, many people
now believe that Brazil's World Cup will be a disaster.

NEW BRUNSWICK - A Georgia truck driver charged in the New Jersey crash that killed one
man and critically injured comedian Tracy Morgan had not slept in more than 24 hours,
according to a criminal complaint filed on Monday.
A tractor trailer driven by Kevin Roper, 35, of Jonesboro, Georgia, slammed into a limousine
van carring Morgan, known for his television roles on "30 Rock" and "Saturday Night Live," and his associates early on Saturday.
Roper was operating a truck "on the New Jersey Turnpike without having slept in excess of 24
hours," according to the complained filed in Middlesex County Court.
The driver was due to appear in court on Wednesday to face a charge of vehicular homicide and three counts of assault by auto,
court documents show.
Morgan and two passengers remained in critical condition two days after the crash.
Roper failed to see traffic slowing in front of him on the turnpike near Cranbury Township, slamming the limo bus carrying Morgan and several other comics and friends after a performance in Delaware, police said.
The impact flipped the Mercedes limo on its roof and caused a chain reaction crash involving
four other vehicles.
Comic James McNair, 62, of Peekskill, New York, who performed under the name "Jimmy Mack," died at the scene, said New Jersey State Police
spokesman Gregory Williams.
Morgan and three other passengers, comics Ardie Fuqua and Harris Stanton, and Morgan's assistant, Jeff Millea, were injured, Williams
said.
Morgan suffered a broken leg, nose and ribs and has undergone surgery at Robert Wood Johnson
University Hospital Center in New Brunswick, according to his spokesman, Lewis Kay.
Roper, a Wal-Mart employee who was driving a company truck at the time of the crash, has obtained a lawyer, the company said.
Bill Simon, chief executive of Wal-Mart U.S. said they were
cooperating with the investigation.
The Brazilian World Cup begins in three days, and Brazil’s biggest city is in chaos and without a key part of its public transport on the fifth day
of a subway workers’ strike.
According to traffic statistics cited by local newspaper Folha de São Paulo, vehicular traffic was gridlocked in more than 20 percent of the city, where 20 million people live.
Street protests by groups opposed to the World Cup are adding to the chaos, with police clashing with protesters and using tear gas.
Striking transit workers and homeless people are also demonstrating in the city’s center and will vote Monday after the downtown rally whether they will continue the strike, Reuters
reported.
The strike is threatening to disrupt the soccer tournament, for which Brazil spent an estimated $14 billion and which is already facing problems, with airports not ready in time for the event's kickoff on June 12 in São Paulo, where the host
nation will take on Croatia.
Six out of 10 Brazilians polled recently said the Cup was bad for the economy, and protests last year that used the World Cup as a focal point of
popular anger drew more than a million people to the streets.
This year, unrest and organizational chaos are combining into a
potentially disastrous mix that could lead to serious disruption at the month long tournament.
Transit workers with SPTrans, the city’s transport agency, are demanding a 12.2 percent salary raise, about twice Brazil’s yearly inflation.
A local court ruled that they can get an 8.7 percent raise, which is what SPTrans was offering, Folha reported, and also imposed a fine on the workers for continuing a strike that
the court had ruled illegal.
The São Paulo state metropolitan transport secretary, Jurandir Fernandes, said 61 strikers
have been fired for taking part in the illegal strike and added, as quoted by Folha: “The strike must end tonight.”
Egyptian police said Monday they had arrested seven people involved in sexually assaulting a
19-year-old girl in Tahrir Square during the inauguration ceremony for President Abdel
Fattah El-Sisi.
The girl is reported to have been transported to a Cairo hospital, but no details are available regarding her current condition.
The Interior Ministry identified the seven people involved in
the assault in a statement and said their ages ranged between 15 and 49.
The ministry said the seven were arrested for "harassing several girls" but did not mention the 19-year-old girl specifically.
The Associated Press reported that a YouTube video had been posted of the attack.
The video shows men crowding around a woman, who is
completely naked, trying to grab her bloodied body as police try and remove her from the
scene.
The attack comes just days after outgoing interim President Adly Mansour issued a decree
categorizing sexual harassment as a crime punishable by a minimum six-month jail term
and a fine worth 3,000 Egyptian pounds.
The decree states that employers, for cases in workplaces, and repeat offenders will receive increased penalties.
Egypt has long been recognized in the media for its growing sexual assault epidemic, and Cairo's Tahrir Square is often a hotbed for attacks.
According to a U.N. survey released in 2013, 99.3 percent of Egyptian women reported
being sexually harassed, with 91 percent saying they feel insecure in the street as a result.
President Jacob Zuma has been released from the hospital, media reports said Sunday, citing South African state media.
"The President will continue to rest for a few days and will work mainly from home during the rest period," Jeff Radebe, a minister in
Zuma's government, said, according to CNN.
.The 72-year-old Zuma was hospitalized for a "thorough checkup following a demanding
schedule" and doctors "are happy with the results," the president's office said, CNN reported citing the South African Press
Association.
Jacob Zuma, who was re-elected as South African president two weeks ago, has been admitted to
an unspecified Pretoria hospital for tests and will not undertake public appearances for a few
days.
Zuma's spokesman said the president was exhausted, blaming a long election campaign.
Unemployment and violence remain serious problems in South Africa and a costly strike at the country's platinum mines has also proved costly for the economy, but Zuma was re-elected on 7 May with 62% of the vote.
On being sworn in two weeks ago, Zuma promised the new administration would be more accountable to the electorate during the next five-year term.
Speaking to thousands of
cheering supporters, Zuma said that although poverty, unemployment and other problems persisted, the country was "a much better place to live in now than before 1994" – when Nelson Mandela became the country's first black president.
South African President Jacob Zuma followed by Graca Machel, the widow of Nelson Mandela Zuma dedicated his election victory to Mandela, or Madiba, as he is known in South Africa, whose death last December at the age of 95 was mourned around the world.
Zuma was booed at Mandela's memorial service in Soweto and is accused of spending millions of pounds of taxpayers' money on refurbishing his home.
Scheduled to address the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union, Zuma sent
ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa to speak in his place.
"Following a gruelling election campaign we found that he needed to rest," said Ramaphosa.
"He attended the NEC lekgotla (strategy planning meeting) this morning, and was thereafter sent packing to go and rest."
President Zuma's office explained he had been advised to rest following "a demanding election and transition programme to the new administration."
Spokesman Mac Maharaj said:
"It's been a hectic period and there has been a need for some rest."
Doctors are said to be satisfied with Zuma's condition.
KANO Nigeria - Nigeria's ousted central bank governor, Lamido Sanusi, was named Emir of Kano on Sunday, making an outspoken government critic one of the most influential leaders in the
largely Muslim north.
Sanusi, who regularly railed against the government's record on corruption, was suspended from his post at the bank in February by President Goodluck Jonathan in a decision that alarmed
international investors.
His move into such a revered position, after the death of his great-uncle the last emir on Friday, could unsettle some in Jonathan's administration which rules over a religiously divided country and is facing national elections in 2015.
The emir is the second-highest Muslim authority in Nigeria. Underlining local politics also raging behind the decision, several hundred supporters of another hopeful candidate - the late emir's oldest son - massed outside the state government building, destroying street signs until police fired in the air to disperse them, witnesses said. Sanusi's switch from the offices of the capital Abuja to the palace in Kano will make him a central player
in confronting a mounting insurgency by Islamist Boko Haram militants in the northeast.
The fighters have set their sights on toppling the traditional Muslim hierarchy, accusing it of failing to enforce what they see as their true interpretation of the Koran.
"Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is the new Emir of Kano," the state government said, using a fuller version of
his name.
Sanusi took the throne, which has few constitutional powers, amid tight security. Soldiers manned major
road junctions in the north’s main city that has suffered a string of bomb attacks blamed on Boko
Haram.
He had been shortlisted by four
“kingmakers” - part of ancient succession rules set up by an emirate known for its sumptuous displays
of royal regalia and ritual.
There is no automatic father-to-son succession, but candidates have to come from leading families.
KARACHI, Pakistan - Taliban militants disguised as security forces stormed Pakistan's busiest airport on Sunday and at least 27 people were killed in a night-long battle at one of the country's most high-profile targets.
The assault on Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan's sprawling commercial hub of 18 million people, all but destroys prospects for peace talks between the Taliban and the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who came to power last year promising to find a negotiated solution to years of violence.
It also deals a heavy blow to Sharif's efforts to attract more foreign investors to revive economic growth and raises questions about security at the
country's key installations.
The attack began just before midnight when 10 gunmen wearing military uniforms shot their way into the airport's old terminal used mainly for
charter and executive flights.
Gun battles raged through the night until security forces regained control of the airport at dawn.
Passengers were evacuated and all flights were diverted. The Pakistani Taliban, an alliance of insurgent groups fighting to topple the government and set up
a sharia state, claimed responsibility, saying it was
in response to army attacks on their strongholds along the Afghan border.
"It is a message to the Pakistan government that we are still alive to react over the killings of innocent people in bomb attacks on their villages," said Shahidullah Shahid, a Taliban spokesman.
Pakistan's paramilitary force said that the attackers were ethnic Uzbeks. Pakistani officials often blame foreign militants holed up in lawless areas on the
Afghan border for staging attacks alongside the Pakistani Taliban around the country.
"Three militants blew themselves up and seven were killed by security forces," Rizwan Akhtar, the regional head of the paramilitary Rangers, said in
televised remarks. "The militants appear to be Uzbek."
Justin Bieber turned to the Lord while being shaken down over his racist videos -- and he has
washed away his sins with a baptism performed in a bathroom. Pastor Carl Lentz -- who works with Bieber in NYC -- said he spent a week doing intense Bible study with Justin last month ...
In the wake of being extorted over the videos. JB's team
was contacted 2 months ago by a man in possession of the videos and wanted a million dollar payday or else he'd go public.
Bieber's religious resurgence focused on studying Bible passages and attending services ... culminating in an actual baptism performed in the bathtub of one of the singer's friends. Why a bathtub, you ask? It was discovered JB previously
checked out a bunch of churches for the dip -- but his cover was blown every time and he wanted to keep the whole thing private. Justin's now got a clean slate with God -- but the public is a harder nut to crack.Amen.

Kano, Nigeria — Hundreds of people were killed in raids by Boko Haram Islamic militants in northeast Nigeria's Borno state, on the border with Cameroon, with some sources putting the death toll at 400 to 500.
On Tuesday, heavily armed men dressed as soldiers in all-terrain vehicles and on motorcycles attacked neighboring Goshe, Attagara, Agapalwa and Aganjara villages in Gwoza district, shooting residents to death and burning homes.
The attacks forced surviving villagers to flee to Cameroon and into the Mandara Mountains on the border.
"The killings are massive. Nobody can say how many people were killed, but the figure runs into some hundreds," said Peter Biye, a lawmaker in Nigeria's lower parliament representing the Gwoza region.
"The area is still under the control of the insurgents, and residents can't go back to bury the dead because of the danger involved," he said.
On Wednesday, a military jet bombarded Boko Haram positions to dislodge the militants from the villages they have occupied, forcing them to temporarily withdraw.
"They returned immediately after the jet left, making it too risky for villagers to return to bury the dead," Biye said.
Dead bodies litter the area around the attacked villages. Ground troops have yet to go to the area to push out the insurgents, he said.
The attackers, who posed as soldiers, told residents they had come to protect them from Boko Haram and asked them to assemble. They singled out men and boys and opened fire on them, Biye said.
A local leader in Attagara village, who fled to nearby Madagali town in neighboring Adamawa state, said the death toll was staggering.
"The death is unimaginable. We have lost between 400 and 500 people in the attacks in which men and male children were not spared," said the local leader, who asked not to be named for security reasons.
"The gunmen pursued on motorcycle people who fled into the bush in a bid to escape and shot them dead.
"Even nursing mothers had their male infants snatched from their backs and shot dead before their eyes," the local leader said.
The insurgents destroyed mobile phone towers in the region, so news of attacks is usually slow to emerge and verification of death tolls difficult to obtain.
If the death toll is confirmed, it will be the worst attack by Boko Haram in its five-year insurgency that has killed thousands, mostly in the northeast.

Chris Brown, 25, was released from prison on June 2, but he’s not out of the woods yet — he’s still awaiting trial for an alleged assault which occurred in Washington, D.C. in Oct. 2013.
However, now that he’s left the big house after spending 59 days there, Chris is a changed man who has learned how to respect his mother, Joyce Hawkins, and his longtime girlfriend, Karrueche Tran, sources have
revealed.
“Jail was one of those things that has humbled Chris and really just made him understand, point blank, that the world doesn’t revolve around him,” source revealed.
“He’s not the center of the universe as he so thought and he’s a regular person just like everybody else. It’s also made him respect women more, specifically his mother and Karrueche.
“Joyce has done nothing but try to give Chris all the best this world offers and she did that, for the most part, singlehandedly. Chris now understands that and told his mother just how proud of her she is,”
The source continued.
“He knows he’s no longer that man. … He wishes he could change those circumstances so that they never even happened.”
As I tore down the streets, running over cars, or up the side of buildings with a purple-ish neon colored trailed following me wherever I went, I came to the
conclusion that InFamous Second Son (PS4) is legitimate fun.
While there were some things I felt Sucker Punch could've improved on, what's presented here is as close to gaming nirvana as I've gotten to since I bought my PS4.
Second Son takes place seven years after inFAMOUS 2. The series' lead character Cole makes way for skinny jeans-wearing punk Delsin Rowe.
Delsin, as we'll come to find out, is a conduit (or in this game, a "bioterrorist") who can "borrow" powers from the other conduits he crosses. He's going to need them too, as he's tasked with taking on the leader of the Department of Unified Protection (D.U.P.), Brooke Augustine.
She's made a habit of locking up all the conduits so they can't use their powers.
Los Angles Clippers owner Donald Sterling became the old, wrinkled face of racism when a conversation with his mistress V. Stiviano was leaked to the public several weeks ago. In the recorded conversation Sterling can be overheard making derogatory comments about African-American basketball players and specifically NBA Hall Of Famer Magic Johnson .
In the days that followed players staged their own forms of protest and the NBA commissioner banned Sterling from the NBA for
life. One former Clipper, Stephen Jackson aka "Stak5″, took to the recording booth to vent his
feelings about the situation "America Da Beautiful"( A Letter To Mr. Sterling).
"When I first heard the Donald Sterling comments I reached out to players to ask them what they were going to do," says Jackson, who played for them briefly before being cut in January of 2014. "If I was still on that team I
wouldn't have played. I wouldn't have played another game in that uniform until the team was sold."
One criticism that has been levied on players in the NBA is that they should know what kind of person they work for. But Jackson insists that just isn't the reality.
"Before the tape came out I'd never seen him. I didn't now who the Clippers' owner was," he
says." I've played on a lot of NBA teams and there's very fewer owners that I've seen or met. I had no recollection of him being a racist or anything before the comments came out."

A private memorial service will be held this Saturday, June 7, at Wake Forest University for late poet and literary icon Dr. Maya Angelou, and while it's hard to imagine who could deliver words to do her rich life justice, according to reports, her good friend Oprah Winfrey will do the honors.
Angelou died last Wednesday , May 28, at her home in Winston-Salem, N.C. and Oprah has been remembering her ever since. "I've been blessed to have Maya Angelou as my mentor, mother/sister, and friend since my 20's," Winfrey wrote in a Facebook post the day Angelou died. "She was there for me always, guiding me through some of the most important years of my life.
The world knows her as a poet
but at the heart of her, she was a teacher. 'When you learn, teach. When you get, give' is one of my best lessons from her." What will the media mogul say at the services to remember her phenomenal friend? "I don't
know what I will say, but it will just come," Oprah told Entertainment Tonight in an
interview where she also recalled the last conversation they had.
During that last conversation, Winfrey says that the late poet was proud of her role in the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. biopic, "Selma." "She said, 'Take
it, baby. Take it all the way,' because said was a part of the movement," Oprah said, nodding to Angelou's Civil Rights activism.
In addition to next weekend's memorial service, Angelou's family plans on having more activities in her honor in other states across the country that her son Guy B. Johnson , will release more information about in the days to come.
Due to limited seating capacity at Wake Forest University's Wait Chapel, the family has decided
to have a closed service for family and friends only, but the service will be live streamed
at go.wfu.edu/angeloumemorial .
New Delhi — A police officer and two other people have been arrested after two teenage girls were gang-raped and left hanging from the branches of a mango tree in a northern Indian village, authorities said Friday.
The shocking attack on the girls -- two cousins aged 14 and 16 -- sparked outrage in the village of Katra Sadatganj and beyond.
Angry villagers protested around the bodies, preventing police from taking them down from the tree for about 15 hours Wednesday, the day after the attack, said Mukesh Saxena, a local police official.
A photo from the village, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, showed the body of one girl, dressed in a green tunic and pants, hanging from the tree. A large group of people, many of them young children, were gathered around the grisly scene.
Police said an autopsy confirmed the girls had been raped and strangled. The cremation of their remains took place late Wednesday night in line with Hindu customs, Saxena said.
Armed police officers have been deployed in the village to prevent any further unrest, he added.

The 850 square kilometers scanned off the coast of western Australia in the hunt for a missing Malaysia Airlines plane are not the "final resting place of MH370," the agency leading the search said Thursday.
The search area is where pings originally thought to be from the black boxes of the Boeing 777 were heard in early April.
"The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has advised that the search in the vicinity of the acoustic detections can now be considered complete and in its professional judgment, the area can now be discounted as the final resting place of MH370," a statement from the Joint Agency Coordination Centre said.
