MECHANICSVILLE, VA - Homeschooled teen says she was kicked out of prom because of dress
A Chesterfield teen says she was kicked out of a local homeschool prom after several dads complained that her dress evoked "impure thoughts."
The 17-year-old then took to the blogosphere to write about her experience and that entry has gone viral.
While senior prom is supposed to be the culmination of your high school years, Clare, a homeschooled teen from Chesterfield, says her evening ended in tears.
It started with a dress, a sparkly stunner that's fingertip length.
Check out the invitation for the
Richmond Homeschool Prom and that's the only
dress requirement for the "Twilight in Paris" themed dance.
"My mom said that it was a hot little thing, but it was definitely within the guidelines," said Hannah Ettinger, Clare's sister.
Hannah says she wanted her sister to share her story on her blog.
That story then went viral.
"I like to use my blog as a place for victims of patriarchal Christianity to speak up," she said.
Hannah believes her teen sister is a victim.
In her own words, Clare writes that when she got to the prom, held at Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Mechanicsville, "some of the dads who were chaperoning had complained that my dancing
was too provocative, and that I was going to cause the young men at the prom to think impure
thoughts."
She says she was then told she had to leave.
Clare's boyfriend was there that night and says it wasn't about the dancing, it was about her dress.
"Nobody was dancing," said James Thompson.
"It was just one big circle in the middle and it was just
really awkward.
Then saying you have to leave
because you're making the men,not even the kids on the floor, but the men who are watching you have impure thoughts.
That's not her position to control what they think."
As for Clare, she ends with this saying in her blog:
"I'm not responsible for some perverted 45-year- old dad lusting after me because I have a sparkly dress on, and if you think I am, then maybe you're part of the problem."
As for me I don't see anything wrong in her dress...
